I'm in the market for a vehicle and what concerns me more about the Rav4 hybrid are stories of the battery repeatedly dying... is this a widespread problem? It’s just daft. Until a final remedy is identified, the interim option is to install a replacement tank. I also bought a 2018 Tacoma and I’m beginning to wonder if Toyota is hiring ex-Boeing engineers. Yes, extremely popular indeed. Why didn't it tell me at all that it was out of gas??
I ended up getting an EV, an Audi eTron. Hybrids are not just about gas mileage.

I’ve been reading that hybrid batteries will go hundreds of thousands of miles, but those miles need to be driven in ten to twelve years. Fact is the fuel gauge is a purposeful lie, with at least a gallon or maybe two when the gauge reads E and/or the distance to empty reads zero. As for the rest of the car, it's pretty awesome. I used to own a Lexus LX 570, which of course got somewhere slightly above 0 mpg in city driving, so I was refilling often. When I got my RAV4 new it has 54 miles on the odometer and a full tank of gas, presumably with 14.5 gallons in it (less some for that 54 miles).
“lackluster driving” – Of course a rav4 is lackluster!. (Big fan of the old Civics… they were amazingly good vehicles!). The nozzle interprets this as full and shuts down. Also side passenger mirror was loose after I bought it and had to get it tightened, but it still makes noise. (Range is a bigger thing than most OEM’s acknowledge.
In the name of science, take a couple jerry cans and run it ’til it dies.
The only reason I can think of to contact them would be to have on record the fact that my car is also having this problem. But that hasn’t been their experience.

This lets me know that they have no fix at all currently and don't plan on it, they are just trying to buy their time so the Lemon Law timeline and buyback timeline run out for the customer, and in the event someone tries to initiate one, they can claim that a "fix is in the works" bs. Only 3 blinks for lane change. I have lived in remote areas of the US and similar to Canada have areas with few and far between gas stations (West Texas, Montana, the Dakotas and even Nebraska where I lived). In an unusual development not often associated with non-EVs, RAV4 Hybrid owners have begun complaining about lackluster driving distance — an issue that stems from the model’s redesigned gas tank. A small sigh of relief for all of us who have driven a little too far “left of low” from time to time.
I will take this monetary loss as an expensive lease but from here on out I will never buy Toyota/Lexus again. I don’t see how fooling people into filling up early is unsafe. Because range is a thing.

How about several tens of thousands owners? I fail to see how this is a safety issue and hwy NHSTA is accepting such complaints. But I do wonder if anybody has run one a late model RAV4 out of gas and seen how much fuel it takes then. In these cases, variations in fuel tank shape may prevent a full refill by up to several gallons. Then advised to await Toyota engineers who are diligently working on the fix! That really doesn’t give the battery enough time to act up, so far. If the vehicle matches this condition, perform active test using Techstream to confirm fuel gauge operation. And ever since, a very slow fill to full.

As you read here last week, the RAV4 Hybrid has catapulted to the top of the Toyota hybrid food chain, easily outselling the once-dominant Prius. Both times when I filled up the new 'distance to empty' was the miles I had driven on the last tank. We don't even try to get more than 9 gallons into the car, it's just too much of an annoyance (and possibly damaging to the emissions system) to continue topping it off over and over.. after the slow fill method drops out at 8.5 gallons.
