I actually just made a video today about plasma accelerators, running 2 of them on the Cobra. Unfortunately, very low ammo. Plasma may have higher thermal load, cost and energy consuption, but it's effective against both hulls and shields while cannon is only against hulls. Useless against small ships though, and very low ammo capacity. Still doable though. Gimballed cannons are alright, though you wont hit anything smaller than an Asp with them in combat. That said, the Class 4 PA take 50% more power for only 30% more damage than the Class 3 equivalents. The Cannon I found a bit less damaging, and useless against shields, but I personally would still go for the cannon because I hit more with it, which effectively tripples my dps over the PA. Also the projectile costs are ridiculous. Even a Small Plasma Accelerator will destroy a well armed hundred tonne ship with a single shot.

Generally speaking cannons and PA's in the current iteration are mostly useless, as they are outperformed by pulse lasers and multi-cannons in every aspect. While definitely fun to use, I wouldn't call them that effective. A faster firing plasma accelerator that sacrifices per shot damage to achieve the increased fire rate. I generally only use the rail gun after shields are down, and then I target something like the power plant, or drives with it. Dumbfire racks. Cannons for extra challenge & skill shots.
