Our interns ended up having an experience near identical to that of other ftes except without the performance reviews and one on one's.

I worked with remote interns. As for the intern networking/social events, I personally found it easier to connect online! This is an excellent opportunity to take something on that has nothing to do with engineering without the stress of feeling like you have something else you need to work on. Real world experience except with a lot more 1on1 time for help or mostly real world ( projects are often specifically picked for being more fun than necessary) but with a lot more fun, swag, and events thrown in to get you to choose Microsoft. However, I still felt that we were able to get a lot of stuff done remotely and really deliver on the intern experience at Microsoft. Me and my bf (both had internships) focused on redoing our apartment. So no, you won’t necessarily have big memorable experiences like you would with an in person internship but this will be an excellent opportunity for self growth professionally and personally. In person internships are full of events, buddies with moral budgets, living coordoors in the same apt with other interns, projects that are often but not always more fun, tons of swag and gifts, a big end of the internship party with local celebrities and free laptops or xboxes.
Personally I think the virtual environment wasn't all that bad, everyone on my team was kind and very respectful of each others' time (esp with different time zones, wifi issues, etc.). Learn more
