They recommend only driving during the dry season (July through November) otherwise you risk getting stuck in the mud.
This hot springs is on private property, but that shouldn't stop you from coming, for it's awesome. I love the bunkers (MASH tents). A single bathroom on premise with an actual toilet and sink though the water is not potable. More: The Ultimate Eastern Oregon Road Trip. The rustic accommodations are perfect for the mood, simple and sparse, just like the desert it's in. Just leaving the Hot Springs camping area and am very sad.
So, not sure why it is classified as that. They were very nice!! There is alcohol there to purchase as well as ice, snacks, etc....which was surprising. It’s hard to predict when they might be around, but if you keep your eyes open towards the eastern edge of the desert, you might get lucky! Bring GPS, compass and binoculars to find your way to the entrance-exit point, and safety marking/lighting to avoid collision. It was much better than we had anticipated.
Includes private access to desert, and Pike's Creek hiking (incl Wilderness pass which you can ask for), and unlimited access to hot springs.
We’re Esther & Jacob. If you go around new moon in the summer, you get dazzling milky way views.
They have their own private access road to the playa that's maintained well enough for any car to use to drive out onto the flats. We got the closest and best tent campsite nearest to the desert. We have many campsites to accommodate all types of campers. We also have private M.A.S.H units for those who wish to have shelter and a soft bed. The night we stayed here we slept inside Moby, but from inside I could still hear the tent next to us flapping furiously all night long.
The hot springs have on-site caretakers, a small store/reception center, restroom and campsites. The hot springs is clothing optional unless there are kids around, which was sort of a pain, but we went with it. It is dispersed camping but keep in mind that the west side of the desert is lined with private property as well.
There was nothing better after spending 3 days hiking and camping in the Steens than soaking in the steaming baths at the Alvord Hot Springs.
This does not affect our opinions and we only feature products that we already own or genuinely would recommend regardless of an affiliate relationship. Either way, drive carefully and cautiously giving yourself plenty of extra time.
Whoa!
They did say that more restrooms were coming!!
The hot springs is clothing optional unless there are kids around, which was sort of a pain, but we went with it. There is decking surrounding, easy on the feet.Test the temperature before getting in. There are also bighorn sheep, mule deer, elk, and pronghorn in the Steens Mountain Wilderness area.
There was a mixture of people there, from motorcyclists, to people camping in the military pods, to RVs, and tent campers like us.
