Use Barge glue around the whole handle as you lay the rope in. A forstner bit will make a clean large round hole. On mine, which I made long before I ever heard of this website, I did not make a loop at the end. (Yeah - it's my first Instructable). Pinterest. StumbleUpon.
You can make a DIY rope handle tray in a few hours, start to finish like mine.
