We will be spending the first two weeks of our annual pilgrimage to Crete this August in Koutoulafari but will undoubtedly spend some time in Hersonissos and may even venture along to Malia for an hour or two (we are in our sixties, shock horror !!) We are staying in chania and cannot decide if we should go on a trip with our rented car to Elafonisi or if we should take the boats to Balos beach. We will be returning this year in september,and it is our first time we have ever returned to the same resort,and we are far from 18/30 crowd. Have a look at my guide to the south coast of Crete for more information. In my opinion, it’s better to enjoy the local one without the stress of hours of bus ride. September is still a nice month, actually one of the best in my opinion, not too hot and not that touristy. Thank you very much!! Any bus will go to Fira, from any other town or from the beach.
Enjoy your trip!! If you are after some trekking in the Samaria Gorge or want to visit and stay close to Elafonissi beach then Chania works better.

You can read more about the island on my post here. I totally agree Alabastron. I would probably stay in Rethymno and Chania, the towns with lots of character and plenty of activities. They have a beautiful infinity pool with a view to the sea, private beach with lots of gazebos for the guests, food to die for and lots of attention for anything you need. Small white villas with a beautiful green garden around, some with a view to the Mediterranean sea, gazebos placed randomly on the private beach for a freedom feeling, great interior design with lovely Greek tiles. In this way you can enjoy a few amazing beaches and you can get a taxi for the night, in case you don’t want to drive.

Like Malia, also Hersonissos has plenty of bars and a long nightlife till the early hours of the morning. Once you have decided on what you want to see then come back here and ask for some recommendations on the best areas to stay :-) Enjoy your research, (ta && ta.queueForLoad ? And this is no wonder, being the area so beautiful. You can, however, access them with a local trip from either Chania or Sitia. The Greek cuisine in Rethymno is just spectacular. Chania has one of the most spectacular old town centres in Crete, with plenty of bars and restaurants, amazing old/ancient buildings, so charming. The boat has the clear advantage that you do not have to stress with the drive but the drawback is the possible choppy sea and you have to move with the group, arriving all at the same time and looking everyone for a spot under the umbrella. We’re late thirties recently met, like restaurants, great food and bars. Hi Eric, first all enjoy your romantic stay wherever you decide to book From Hersonissos, you can visit on a day trip Chrissi Beach or the ancient town of Knossos. The town beach is also quite nice. It has a nice local beach too, on a short walk from the town centre. Being so close to the airport means also that you will not spend much time on transportation.

With a rented car you can explore the east side of Crete which is magnificent. From there you can think about a short trip to Rethymno, about 1hour by car or more with public bus. I would personaly stay in Fira for 5 days. Im going with my GF (Early 30’s) for 4 days leaving from heraklion airport. You may think that you are suddenly in the Caribean. < Malia is just about the only place to which this applies.
Infinity Pool at the Amirandes, Grecotel Exclusive Resort. It’s the trendiest and richest area of Crete. We don’t mind splitting up our stays in 2 locations! View from a drone of the Caramel Grecotel Boutique Resort, From Rethymno, you can easily visit the Samaria Gorge, the most spectacular and easy to access trekking in Crete. It’s ok for 4 days. As I said, the large size can actually be intimidating, compared to other Greek islands that you can visit in 2 or 3 days. Santa Marina: One To Avoid! It has really all you need for a long stay. In Crete you are best to avoid not only Malia...but Hersonissos as well...as these are both party resorts for the 18 - 30 type tourists.......However there are lots of places that tick all your boxes in Crete and not only in the West of the island either, in fact one of the most chilled out places that I have been to in Crete is the very far north east of the island. The Casa Delfino Hotel & Spa is my favourite accommodation in Chania, with its own spa and relaxation area besides the lovely view.
